Northern and Central Nevada Wake to Bitter Cold
Residents across northern and central Nevada are experiencing freezing conditions early this morning as clear skies and a northerly flow aloft allow temperatures to plunge well below forecast levels.
The National Weather Service reports that overnight lows have fallen into the single digits across many valley locations, with some areas feeling even colder due to down-valley drainage winds.
Temperatures Fall Below Expected Levels
Forecasters noted that temperatures dropped below earlier NBM (National Blend of Models) projections, prompting adjustments to both minimum temperature forecasts and Apparent Temperatures through 15Z.
Highlights include:
- Many valleys across northern and central Nevada are registering temperatures in the single digits.
- Apparent Temperatures (wind chills) have fallen even further in some locations.
- Areas experiencing light down-valley drainage winds may feel temperatures around or slightly below 0°F.
Despite generally light winds across the region, the combination of radiational cooling and cold northerly flow aloft is producing dangerously cold morning conditions, especially in sheltered basins and high-desert valleys.
Advice
Forecasters advise dressing in layers, limiting time outdoors, and ensuring pets and livestock have adequate shelter.
Temperatures are expected to gradually recover later today, but cold conditions will persist across the region through the morning hours.
